Move over Mykonos! Europe has a new summer hotspot that’s already been on the maps of “it” crowds for a while now. Located on the island that carries the same name, Hvar Town has quickly gained the status of Croatia’s most prestigious destination.
As you come onboard for your luxury charter holiday, you will soon notice that Croatia has more ravishing islands than you ever thought possible, each with an authentic charm that makes all worth a visit. But Hvar is understandably the most popular of them all, blending wild nature with swish restaurants, translucent seas with sizzling beach clubs and rich historical heritage with the trendiest boutiques.
On the island, you’ll find several tranquil villages, but the town itself is far from a sleepy coastal town.
It’s hard to stay indifferent to the labyrinthian rocky streets that carry the fragrance of lavender, two historical fortresses whose each stone hides a multitude of secrets, or the azure seas dotted with the most luxurious yachts.
Whether you plan to simply soak in the sun with a cocktail in hand, dance until dawn, or learn more about the history of this mesmerising town, you won’t be disappointed.
What to See in Hvar Town
Since Hvar Town enjoyed utmost significance as a trade and culture centre in the Adriatic, the cosmopolitan aura can be felt anywhere you go. The town was ruled by Romans, Ancient Greeks, Venetians, and even the French - all these empires left a significant mark on the looks of the magnificent Hvar.
If you care to leave your luxury yacht for a few hours for some sightseeing, you’ll find that there are many landmarks worth exploring. Don’t worry about the heat - the old stone walls offer plenty of shade!
St. Stephen’s Cathedral
The famous cathedral on the main square has several peculiarities that make it one of the most interesting ones in the region, starting with the bell tower, that when confronted with the last sunray of the day, becomes transparent, showcasing everything through the tight arches of the structure. Inside, the church is almost like a renaissance museum of sorts, with a display of works from some of the greatest masters of the era: Stefano Celesti and Palma Junior are just a few names, but the greatest highlight is the 13th century Madonna and the Child, whose author is unknown.
Spanjola Fortress
Visiting the Venetian Fortress that towers over the city will require some physical fitness, reached by climbing a seemingly neverendless loop of steps. The well-preserved fort dates was built somewhere in the beginning of the 16th century by the Venetians, who hired Spanish architects after whom it was named Spanjola (Spanish). Inside, you’ll find numerous historic artefacts, some dating back to the Bronze Age. Most importantly, you will be awarded for the climb by the best panoramic views of this mesmerising town.
Francisian Monastery
After strolling past the riva, continue by the marina (don’t forget to wave to your charter’s captain!) and you will reach the intriguing Francesian Monastery. Established in 1465 and funded by the island’s nobility, the Monstarery will amaze any art and architecture aficionado with the collection of works kept here, most notably the The Last Supper, an 8m by 2.5m painting by the Venetian Matteo Ingoli. The views of the sparkly seas also help in making this Monatersy a favourite for many visitors.
Best Beaches in Hvar Town
Although your luxury yacht gives you the freedom to cruise anywhere you’d like for a swim, Hvar Town boasts several spectacular beaches if you feel like staying here for a few days or to refresh after a whole day of exploring. Just don’t miss your tour of Pakleni Otoci, which many consider the highlight of your yacht charter itinerary and is minutes from the town itself.
Pokonji Dol Beach
An idyllic beach whose glittery, turquoise water will immediately lure you in for a swim, Pokonji Dol is located about 20 minutes from the town’s centre and is ideal for families who did not come to Hvar for the wild day parties. Here, you’ll enjoy relative serenity and almost untouched nature. The beach itself is pebbly.
Bonj Beach
Perhaps the most famous (or infamous) beach not just in the town, but in the region is the sophisticated Bonj, where the jet set comes to play in the swish Les Bains Beach Club, but more on that later.
Mekicevica Beach
A gorgeous, aquamarine cove, Mekicevica Beach is perfect for when you feel escaping the crowds and enjoying the day disturbed by nothing else than the sound of waves hitting the pebbly shore. Seldomly busy, this beach is the town’s hidden gem, where you can enjoy the seductive nature and let your children play freely.
Best Beach Clubs in Hvar Town
While Hvar has an incredibly rich history and an effervescent environment, most jetsetters are here for the wild beach clubs. Don your best summer linens and get ready for a hazy summer day (and night).
One of Europe’s hottest beach clubs makes Scorpios look pale in comparison with a sleek, modern interior, lavish balinese beds, and seductive private beach. Along with the beach club, Les Bains has an extraordinary restaurant with gourmet dishes that will leave no hedonist indifferent, as well as a designer boutique where you can update your beachwear. The prices are quite hefty, and you should book in advance - but you will end up enjoying a celebrity experience on one of Croatia’s best beaches.
This vibrant beach club has already become emblematic of the island and brings A-lister from all over the world who come to enjoy the beats played by some of the most famous international DJ-s. During the day, you can come and relax to a more casual atmosphere, but when the sun starts setting, the party can get pretty heated.
Best Restaurants in Hvar Town
Although the mastery of your luxury yacht’s onboard chef can be pretty hard to top, Hvar Town has a myriad of restaurants for a romantic outing that will make you want to explore.
Mediterraneo Wine and Dine
The rustic ambiance of this restaurant somewhat clashes with the modern dishes served here - classic Mediterranean cuisine gets a new life with the innovative touch of their incredibly talented chef. Many claim that their octopus is the best in all of Adriatic - you are definitely in for a treat!
Fig Hvar
If you’d like a change from seafood and Dalmatian cuisine - there can be too much of a good thing - head to Fig, a vibrant restaurant where you’ll have the pleasure to taste some delicious Mexican dishes, prepared using only the freshest Croatian produce. If you like their food, you should know they have another branch in Split, next up on your luxury charter cruise itinerary.
Tri Prsuta Wine Bar
To see how the town comes alive at night, head to this casual-looking restaurant hidden in one of the narrow streets. An authentic Dalmatian atmosphere, delicious food and the hospitality of the owner, Rocco, ensure an unforgettable outing, perfect for couples.
Giaxa
After a dinner here, you’ll wonder - where is Giaxa’s Michelin star? Located in a 15th Century gothic mansion, this restaurant specialises in delivering beautifully presented gourmand dishes. Our recommendations are the saffron prawn risotto, cheese ravioli with black truffle sauce and the lobster linguine. The cellar of this superb restaurant has over 100 bottles from all over the globe to choose from, making Giaxa a favourite among wine enthusiasts.
Divino
To enjoy the best vistas of the town and the seas, book a table at Divino, a sophisticated restaurant with a long list of celebrity regulars.
