Best things to see in Dubrovnik
City Walls & Forts
When you arrive at Dubrovnik, one of the first things you will see are the towering walls that surround the city. The contrast of the soft beige walls and the deep blue waters is absolutely enchanting.
Over the course of Dubrovnik’s history, the walls have gone through a few different renovations. Originally built in the 9th century, more walls and forts were added in the 14th century. With the threat of attacks from neighbouring countries, even more walls were added during the 15th century. Though these walls are no longer needed, they are still incredible to look at.
While you are cruising on the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea on your luxury yacht, take time to pause and take in the incredible view. You’ll likely be able to see views that most people wouldn’t be able to from atop the walls. Although you can view the walls from your vessel, try taking a stroll along the walls as well to see the architecture and city views from the impressive Dubrovnik forts.
Lush Lokrum
One amazing thing about visiting Dubrovnik with your own private charter yacht, is that you can explore all the smaller islands surrounding Dubrovnik. Only a 10-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik, you can find Lokrum which is one of the best swimming spots in the area. The beaches may be a bit rocky, but the waters are gentle and warm - perfect for an afternoon swim.
If you want to explore the mainland of Lokrum, then there are two main areas to visit: the Benedictine Monastery and the Fort Royal. The Benedictine Monastery is famous for many reasons, but it is most known as one of the filming locations for “Game of Thrones.” Whether or not you are a fan of the show, the architecture and atmosphere of the monastery makes you feel like you have been transported back in time.
To get the best views of Lokrum, head to Fort Royal located in the centre of the island. This circular fort began in the early 19th century during the French occupation, but has now become one of the island’s favourite attractions. From the roof of the fort, you can see some of the most stunning views of Lokrum’s old town.
Rector’s Palace
Much of Dubrovnik’s beauty comes from its stunning architecture, and Rector’s Palace is no exception. First established in the 13th century, it was rebuilt on two separate occasions, but has retained much of its Gothic-Renaissance architecture. Look out for the fine carvings along the columns and staircases throughout the palace.
Rector’s Palace was first created to house the elected rector and included an office, halls, offices, and even a dungeon. Today, Rector’s Palace has become a museum that teaches the history of Ragusa, and showcases the glorious architecture of the palace. If you are a music lover, then visit the palace during the summer months. The atrium at Rector’s Palace often doubles as a concert hall during Dubrovnik’s Summer Festival.
Best Things to Do
Snorkelling in the Blue Cave
For the visitors that want to take a break from the city crowds, take your private charter yacht over to the Elaphiti Islands for some snorkelling adventures. The Blue Cave is tucked away on the south end of Kolocep, and is a true hidden gem. Stop your vessel right outside the caves, and put on your favourite snorkelling gear to access the Blue Cave.
As soon as you swim your way into the cave, you will be floored by the views. Although the cave is a bit dark, the bright blue waters are still visible and create a gorgeous contrast with the darkness of the cave. If that’s not enough, there are other caves that surround the Blue Cave waiting to be explored. The waters and rock formations of Dubrovnik are so stunning, it would be a shame not to go for an adventurous boat ride and explore them all.
Take the cable car to Mount Srd
The stunning architecture and sunset views of Dubrovnik are what have made it such a famous city. There is no better place to see them than by going up Mount Srd. There are many ways to get to the top of Mount Srd, but the best way is definitely via cable car.
Starting from the Ploce and Buze gates, the cable car takes you all the way up to Mount Srd in just a few minutes. During the cable car ride, take a moment to appreciate the breathtaking views of Dubrovnik. See the orange roofed houses, the old walls, and the azure waters that surround the city. To get the finest views, go around sunset - the lighting is just amazing.
If you are more of an active spirit, try hiking up Mount Srd. It is not an overly difficult hike, but it is a beautiful view on the way up. You see the old city below as you climb, and are surrounded by local flora on the way up. It is a great way to experience a bit of activity while enjoying Dubrovnik’s lush landscapes.
Go island hopping at Elafiti Islands
The Elafiti Islands are made up of six smaller islands that are perfect for the traveller that just wants to relax. The advantage of your luxury charter cruise is that you can enjoy island hopping and discover all the beautiful areas that are hidden from the large waves of tourists.
The three main islands to visit are Kolocep, Lopud, and Sipan, but you can look at the other islands as well. Kolocep and Lopud are car-free, so it’s a lovely place to enjoy long walks through the islands’ forests and beaches. Rest on the soft sandy beaches, or swim around in the islands’ clear blue waters. If you want a bit more of an active trip, you can easily explore these islands via kayak or canoe.
